Abstract

To compare the effect of Neem (Azadirechta indica) oil (topical) and Haridra (Curcuma longa) (systemic) in the treatment of chronic non-healing wounds with regard to wound healing. Method: A sample of 60 patients attending the wound clinic at University Hospital, Varanasi, India with wounds of more than six weeks duration were enrolled into the study. They were alternately allocated to group I (topical application of neem oil), group II (haridra capsules orally) and group III (both drugs were used). Wound biopsy was performed. Wound size was measured and recorded at weekly follow up in three groups. Biopsy was repeated after four weeks of treatment and sent for histopathological examination for assessment of angiogenesis and DNA analysis. Results: Total patients were 47 who completed the study. 50% wound healing was observed after eight weeks is 43.8% of group I , 18.2% of group II and 70% of group III. Microscopic Angiogenesis Grading System (MAGS) scores show highly significant effect of combined use of both drugs when compared before and after treatment
